Pakistan ex-head Musharraf charged in Bhutto death

mussaraf1An anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, has indicted former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf and six others in the 2007 death of Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, according to the country's government-run radio station, Radio Pakistan.

No one could be reached at the Pakistani embassy in Washington. Musharraf denied the charges after they were read to him, according to the government station. A hearing will take place in the case on Aug. 27. Musharraf has asked not to have to appear in person before the court and a judge has reserved judgment on the request, according to the radio organization.

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party's top brass on Saturday asked the party's spokespersons and media cell office bearers from across the states to be more aggressive in taking on the Congress, but maintain decency and decorum while countering the Opposition through television debates and press interactions.
At a closed-door media workshop organised for its spokespersons, panelists and media cells at the Centre and in states, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and her Rajya Sabha counterpart Arun Jaitley dwelt on the "dos and don'ts" while handling the media and attacking the political opponents.

New Delhi: Congress leader Anirudh Prasad alias Sadhu Yadav reiterated his stand on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi saying he is the Prime Ministerial material. Speaking to CNN-IBN, RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav's enstranged brother-in-law said, "There is no one who is better than Narendra Modi. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi is not even in the race for it, he is far behind."

The move can be seen as the party's preparation for the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
The media workshop began in the morning.
He has maintained in earlier interactions with the party leadership that this section of voters is desperate for change. The number of people below the age of 35 is estimated to be around 65 per cent of the total population.

About 30 percent of Lok Sabha members and 17 percent of Rajya Sabha members have criminal cases pending against them, said a report which noted that the probability of winning an election by a candidate with criminal record is higher than that of one with a clean background.
Shiv Sena members top the list, the report released Monday. The joint report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and the National Election Watch (NEW) was based on affidavits filed by candidates during elections since 2004.

The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh is battling a fresh crisis after key Income Tax documents revealed that his last election campaign named operation 'Vijay' was financed by mining baron Sudhir Sharma.
 
Mining baron Sudhir Sharma was a college lecturer until 2005. Sharma was raided by the I-T department in June 2012. Sharma allegedly made big fortunes after he started managing the affairs of State Mining Minister Laxmi Kant Sharma.

In Bankura, the TMC was leading in 45 seats while West Midnapore, the party was leading in 53 seats. The TMC took a huge lead in East Midnapore, where it is ahead in 51 seats, followed by the Left, which is ahead in 10 seats. The Congress is leading in 162 seats in all.

The Janata Dal(U) on Wednesday directed its two MLAs in the Jharkhand Assembly to vote against the Hemant Soren-led government during the vote of confidence tomorrow.
"The party's national leadership has asked MLAs Gopal Krishna Patar and Sudha Choudhary to vote against the government in tomorrow's floor test," senior leader of the JDU's Jharkhand unit, Pramod Mishra, said here.

bihar-deathThe Central Government is waiting for the forensic report to find out the reason behind the incident of food contamination at Saran district in Bihar, which has claimed 21 lives so far.
 
It’s believed that the food took a disastrous toll on the children, as it was already contaminated.   "It is very sad to know about yesterday's (Tuesday) incident where food poisoning has taken place and 20 children and the cook have passed away and another 21 are hospitalized.
 
We have taken serious note of what has happened," Minister for Human Resource Development Pallam Raju said.

Modi1LLThis is funding, Modi style. Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has ushered in a corporate style of organizing meetings that will ensure that the public themselves pays for the entire expenses of the public meeting scheduled to be addressed by him at LB Stadium in the city on August 11.
The BJP is charging Rs 5 per ticket for the public meeting and on day one of the online registration for the meeting on Monday, about 8,000 persons signed up.
 
Organizers are expecting anywhere between 50,000 to one lakh attendance for the meet, which at the rate of Rs 5 per ticket would amount to about Rs 5 lakh in case the party manages a full house.

Modi1LLA complaint has been filed against Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi at a police station in Hyderabad on Sunday over remarks he made about the post-Godhra riots.
Ghulam Rabbani, a practising advocate, lodged the two-page complaint with Santosh Nagar police station, seeking legal action against Modi and his immediate arrest terming his statements as “highly provocative and malicious against Muslim community, with an intention to wound their religious feelings and promote enmity between Muslims and Hindus”.

parliament3More details of the Supreme Court verdict that disqualifies convicted MPs and MLAs are out now. The court has ruled that any person in the custody of police will be temporarily barred from contesting elections.
The court has ruled that a person can't contest elections if he or she is in judicial or police custody. This ban shall be in place only as long as the person is behind bars.
The court has in this regard, referred to Section 62 of the Representation of Peoples Act, according to which a person in jail does not have the right to vote. The court has gone a step ahead saying if a person behind bars has no right to vote, he or she does not have a right to contest in polls too.

The Congress has on Monday dented the Nationalist Congress Party's (NCP) stronghold in a big way by sweeping Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad Municipal Corporation in western Maharashtra, winning 40 of the 76 seats. The Pawar-led NCP, which controlled the corporation for the last five years -- in alliance with BJP for some time -- got only 18 seats.
