Pakistan ex-head Musharraf charged in Bhutto death

mussaraf1An anti-terrorism court in Rawalpindi, Pakistan, has indicted former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf and six others in the 2007 death of Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, according to the country's government-run radio station, Radio Pakistan.

No one could be reached at the Pakistani embassy in Washington. Musharraf denied the charges after they were read to him, according to the government station. A hearing will take place in the case on Aug. 27. Musharraf has asked not to have to appear in person before the court and a judge has reserved judgment on the request, according to the radio organization.

flag hostingAn ugly spat marred the Independence Day celebrations in Mussoorie when two politicians came to blows at a flag hoisting ceremony. BJP MLA Ganesh Joshi and Manmohan Singh Malla, Mussoorie municipal chairman and a Congress leader, both wanted to hoist the flag on their own.
The two leaders climbed the podium to try and hoist the flag. They started arguing and tried to push each other away at the Independence Day celebrations.
They kept on shouting while the people who had come for the Independence Day celebrations looked on. Some people tried to separate the duo, but both of them tried to snatch the rope and pull it to unfurl the flag.

Patna, Aug 15: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday asked people to maintain communal harmony as he hoisted the national flag amid tight security in Patna.  "I appeal to people to maintain communal harmony as it is a must for development and peace," he said at an official function to mark India's Independence Day. Mr. Nitish Kumar expressed serious concern over incidents of communal clashes in Nawada district where curfew was imposed four days ago.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) vice president and former MP Lal Jan Basha died in a road accident Thursday at Narketpally in Andhra Pradesh. He was 56. Basha was coming to Hyderabad from Guntur when the four-wheeler in which he was travelling hit a divider in Nalgonda district, about 80 km from here.

Nearly 10 months after the British government warmed upto Narendra Modi, the India groups of the country’s two main political parties have invited the Gujarat chief minister to visit the UK.
The ball was set rolling by the Opposition party’s Labour Friends of India when its chairman, Barry Gardiner MP, sent a letter to Modi last week inviting him to the House of Commons to speak on ‘The Future of Modern India’.

UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi is set to lead the debate on the Food Security Bill from government's side on Wednesday. UPA's ambitious Rs 1.25 lakh crore bill aims to provide subsidised food grain to 70 per cent of the population in the country. The Congress has issued a whip to all its MPs to attend proceedings.
However, Murli Manohar Joshi will initiate the debate for the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) in Parliament. The cabinet had introduced the scheme as a law last month, but Parliament has to approve the legislation within six weeks.

CPI leader Gurudas Dasgupta has claimed that a senior Petroleum Ministry officer was transferred by Minister M Veerappa Moily over the recent gas price hike issue. Dasgupta made these claims in a letter to the PM Manmohan Singh saying that Moily decided to get rid of bureaucrats who stood up to him.
Dasgupta, who has been opposing the government's decision to raise natural gas prices, said Moily has "decided to get rid of inconvenient bureacrats who are standing up to him. By this order, the mala fide of the Petroleum Minister is completely established".
He said by "abruptly" transferring the bureaucrat, who was Joint Secretary (Exploration) for over one-and-a-half years, "the government loses the expertise that the officer had gained in the subject.

Narendra Modi PTIBharatiya Janata Party's campaign committee chief Narendra Modi is stepping up preparations for the coming Lok Sabha elections. He will hold a media management workshop in the national capital on August 17.
Modi is expected to devise a strategy to handle media ahead of the polls. Apart from Modi, Arun Jaitley, Sushma Swaraj and Rajnath Singh will also be a part of the workshop.
All BJP spokespersons from across the country have been asked to be present. A day after the workshop, Modi will meet state BJP presidents.

Good news: India’s first women bank gets govt nod, to start ops in November.

Paving the way for setting up of an all-women bank, the government  on Thursday approved Rs 1,000-crore seed capital for Bhartiya Mahila Bank Ltd.The government will seek Parliament’s nod for funds for the bank through a supplementary budget grant in the ongoing session. The bank is likely to be operational by November.
Earlier this week, Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena had said in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha that “it is proposed to solicit the approval of the Cabinet to include the allocation of Rs 1,000 crore to the Women’s Bank in the first Supplementary to be approved in the current Monsoon Session of Parliament”.

A compromise may be on the cards between the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress on the controversial FDI cap in insurance and pension. CNN-IBN learnt that the two parties are close to striking a deal where the FDI limit is hiked to 49 per cent from the current 26 per cent with the rider that voting rights be restricted to 26 per cent.
If the government meets the condition, then the BJP is willing to get the bill passed in the Parliament.

It's D-Day for Telangana as UPA allies are likely to discuss the Congress Core Group's proposal to create a separate state. The Congress Working Committee is set to meet after that meeting at 5.30 on Tuesday evening where the proposal is likely to be discussed.
The CWC is then likely to pass a resolution, which may endorse creating a separate state of Telangana. The CWC resolution may address other demands for separate states and is likely to suggest setting of a state reorganisation committee.

Akhilesh Yadav FDI 295x200Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is under pressure after IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal was suspended allegedly for going tough on the sand mining mafia in Greater Noida.
After widespread outrage and criticism from the Opposition and the IAS officers association, her suspension may just be revoked. "A suspension order isn't up for debate, I will look into this on Wednesday," said Akhilesh Yadav, promising a review of his own decision.
Durga, a 2009 batch IAS officer, had ordered a crackdown on illegal sand mining rampant on Yamuna and Hindon river beds. But she was suspended for her decision of bringing down a wall of a mosque in a village in Greater Noida, a move which generated some tension on the ground.

30 percent Lok Sabha MPs have criminal cases against them: report.

About 30 percent of Lok Sabha members and 17 percent of Rajya Sabha members have criminal cases pending against them, said a report which noted that the probability of winning an election by a candidate with criminal record is higher than that of one with a clean background.
Shiv Sena members top the list, the report released Monday. The joint report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and the National Election Watch (NEW) was based on affidavits filed by candidates during elections since 2004.

The Shivraj Singh Chouhan government in Madhya Pradesh is battling a fresh crisis after key Income Tax documents revealed that his last election campaign named operation 'Vijay' was financed by mining baron Sudhir Sharma.
 
Mining baron Sudhir Sharma was a college lecturer until 2005. Sharma was raided by the I-T department in June 2012. Sharma allegedly made big fortunes after he started managing the affairs of State Mining Minister Laxmi Kant Sharma.

"I have requested Modi to contest from Nalanda parliamentary seat in the home district of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar as he (Modi) is likely to sail through by a massive margin by riding on popular wave in his favour," BJP national vice-president C P Thakur told reporters here.

In Bankura, the TMC was leading in 45 seats while West Midnapore, the party was leading in 53 seats. The TMC took a huge lead in East Midnapore, where it is ahead in 51 seats, followed by the Left, which is ahead in 10 seats. The Congress is leading in 162 seats in all.
