Rajya Sabha adjourned over Vanzara letter

NEW DELHI: Rajya Sabha was on Thursday adjourned for 15 minutes following uproar by SP and JD(U) members over charges against Narendra Modi by jailed IPS officer D G Vanzara.

SP and JD(U) members were on their feet shouting slogans the moment the House met for the day.

Deputy chairman P J Kurein asked them to take their seats so that a reference could be read out to pay tributes to former President and Rajya Sabha's first Chairman Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan.

After the reference, they moved into the aisles demanding that their notice for discussion on the issue be taken up.

Moily in doubt over amendment to RTI Bill, says timing not right: sources

New Delhi: Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister M Veerappa Moily has expressed doubts over the amendment to the Right to Information Bill saying the timing may not be right, considering the poor perception about politicians, said sources. The amendment, aimed at keeping political parties out of the RTI ambit, is likely to be taken up by the Lok Sabha on Thursday.
The government and the Opposition seemed to be united on this issue and a Cabinet note said that as political parties are neither public bodies nor Constitutional bodies and they do not take government funds, hence should be kept out of the RTI loop.

Patna, Aug 15: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday asked people to maintain communal harmony as he hoisted the national flag amid tight security in Patna.  "I appeal to people to maintain communal harmony as it is a must for development and peace," he said at an official function to mark India's Independence Day. Mr. Nitish Kumar expressed serious concern over incidents of communal clashes in Nawada district where curfew was imposed four days ago.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) vice president and former MP Lal Jan Basha died in a road accident Thursday at Narketpally in Andhra Pradesh. He was 56. Basha was coming to Hyderabad from Guntur when the four-wheeler in which he was travelling hit a divider in Nalgonda district, about 80 km from here.

The Special Investigation Team, which probed Zakia Jafri's accusation of complicity in facilitating the 2002 Gujarat riots against Chief Minister Narendra Modi and others, relied upon "the accused" but not the witnesses in its probe, her lawyer said on Monday.

"SIT in its closure report has relied upon statements of high-ranking government officials against whom we have complained but not bothered to investigate or verify what the witnesses, such as the then head of state Intelligence Bureau RB Sreekumar, has said under oath about complicity of state administration," said Jafri's lawyer Mihir Desai.

A day after the Supreme Court dismissed the anticipatory bail plea of PP Pandey, Gujarat's police officer on Tuesday surrendered before a CBI court.

A 1982-batch IPS officer, Pandey today appeared before the CBI court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) HS Khutwad and surrendered before the court.

Pandey has been named as an accused in the alleged staged shootout in which college girl Ishrat Jahan and her three associates were killed in Gujarat.

Opposition and treasury benches continued to target each other over Kishtwar violence in Jammu and Kashmir and the issue led to uproarious scenes in Parliament on Tuesday. Even as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs criticised the Omar Abdullah government in the Lok Sabha, curfew remained in force for the fifth straight day on August 12 in Kishtwar.

"Religious places were targeted in Jammu and Kashmir. All this happened when (former) Jammu and Kashmir home minister Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo was present there. The government should immediately look into the matter and an all-party Parliamentary team should be send there to review the situation. All the people responsible for this should be punished," said BJP MP Yogi Adityanath.

BJP rejects Planning Commission's poverty ratio claim.

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday slammed the UPA government's claim that India's poverty ratio has declined to 21.9 per cent in 2011-12 from 37.2 per cent in 2004-2005.

The BJP accused the government of lowering the bar on the definition of poverty and attempting to mislead the people of India by spinning the new figures as an achievement.

"If you change the definition of poor, then poverty will reduce. It depends how the poor are perceived," said BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi.

Sources said that a large chunk of BJP's Bihar unit cadres, mainly in the Mithilanchal region of north Bihar, are also likely to join the JD(U).

 

Four of the BJP MLAs have reportedly also hit out the party's central leadership and former Bihar deputy chief minister Sushil Modi.

 

 While MLA Amarnath Gami has been suspended, sources said the party is considering action against other 'rebel' leaders - Vijay Mishra, Shashi Hazari and Rana Ganeshwar - also.

Aziliz Gouez, a 34-year-old French citizen who holds two masters degrees and worked for François Hollande before he was president of France, has been appointed chief speech-writer to President Michael D Higgins.

Áras an Uachtaráin has not formally confirmed Ms Gouez’s employment, but she is understood to have begun work this week after completing an interview and vetting process. She could not be reached for comment.

The post, which carries the title of “head of speech writing”, carries a minimum salary of €65,000 and the appointment is for a three-year period.

Two months after he was named vice-president of the BJP in Delhi, theatre director Aamir Raza Husain left the party red-faced after he slammed Narendra Modi on a television show, holding him responsible for the 2002 Gujarat riots in which hundreds of Muslims were killed.

 Husain also heaped praised on L K Advani, calling him "the only statesman" in the country.

He resigned on Tuesday after his remarks created a furore in the party. He also called Modi "a divisive leader, not inclusive leader".

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Monday justified the decision by the JD(U) to split from BJP-led NDA.

 

 Kumar said that his stand on Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has been vindicated after his recent which have sparked a controversy.

"Whatever has been happening in the past 2-3 days vindicates our stand. It proves that the decision taken by the JD(U) was the right thing to do," Nitish said.

 

 The 17-year-old BJP-JD(U) in Bihar alliance ended in June after Modi was promoted as BJP's Election Campaign Committee Chairman.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to defend his comments on the 2002 Gujarat riots during his first detailed interview after becoming the Bharatiya Janata Party's campaign panel chief.

"Modi tweeted the link to his interview with Reuters saying, "In our culture every form of life is valued & worshipped. My original interview with Reuters http://nm4.in/138jss0...People are best judge."

This came as Modi faced immense criticism after his interview to Reuters in which he said he is a Hindu nationalist as he is born Hindu. "I am nationalist. I'm patriotic. Nothing is wrong. I am born Hindu. Nothing is wrong. So I'm a Hindu nationalist. So yes, you can say I'm a Hindu nationalist because I'm a born Hindu," he told Reuters.

Digvijay Singh Said:Congress will not declare Rahul Gandhi as PM candidate

The Congress will not declare Rahul Gandhi as its Prime Ministerial candidate in the Lok Sabha elections, senior party leader Digvijay Singh hinted on Friday while dismissing suggestions that BJP's projection of Narendra Modi is a challenge to it.

 He also did not say whether Prime Minister Manmohan Singh could be a candidate for the top post once again if the party wins next year's elections.

"We do not have a presidential form of government. Congress party does not declare PM or CM candidates before elections...Even in the Karnataka Assembly elections, we had not declared any CM candidate," Singh told in an interview.
