Kishtwar still under curfew; Opposition, government blame each other.

 

New Delhi/ Jammu:

Opposition and treasury benches continued to target each other over Kishtwar violence in Jammu and Kashmir and the issue led to uproarious scenes in Parliament on Tuesday. Even as Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MPs criticised the Omar Abdullah government in the Lok Sabha, curfew remained in force for the fifth straight day on August 12 in Kishtwar.

"Religious places were targeted in Jammu and Kashmir. All this happened when (former) Jammu and Kashmir home minister Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo was present there. The government should immediately look into the matter and an all-party Parliamentary team should be send there to review the situation. All the people responsible for this should be punished," said BJP MP Yogi Adityanath.

At least 111 people have been arrested on Monday for inciting violence while eight districts of Jammu region continue to be under curfew. Eleven of the arrests have been made in Kishtwar while 100 were taken into custody in Jammu. The communal clashes have left three persons dead and 60 injured.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has also accused the Opposition of fishing in troubled waters. Speaking to IBN18 Editor-in-Chief Rajdeep Sardesai, he hit out at BJP leader Arun Jaitley for going to Jammu at a sensitive time.

"I'm not blaming the BJP for the violence. That having been said, there is no doubt that the BJP has sought to capitalise on it, otherwise why would Arun Jaitley rush to Jammu the next day? Why doesn't he do it when communal violence breaks out in other parts of the country? I haven't seen him respond when communal violence takes place in other parts of the country, places much closer to Delhi," Omar said.

He also criticised Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi for attacking his government during a speech in Hyderabad. "There have been a whole lot of irresponsible statements made, not based on facts. I mean, you had the projected PM of the NDA going around in Hyderabad suggesting that he didn't know how many people had died and shops burnt, whereas the facts were well known to the people that three people were killed and the exact number of shops destroyed in the violence was also well known. The fact is that a lot of people have decided to invent facts or stories to suit their argument in this whole instance," Omar said.
