THE TEAMS AND THE MAYBES: The 14-team tournament gathers the 10 Test-playing countries: Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Zimbabwe. Ireland has qualified, while three others teams will also attempt to qualify, possibly Scotland, Netherlands, Kenya or Canada based on current rankings and results.

IPL Scandal: BCCI probe panel termed illegal by High Court.

The Bombay High Court (HC) has termed BCCI's probe panel -that investigated the IPL spot fixing scam- as illegal and unconstitutional. This decision by HC is seen as a major set back for N. Srinivasan who was set to return as BCCI President on the basis of the probe panel's findings.

BCCI's probe panel set up by the cricket control body to look into the allegations of spot fixing in the IPL season had virtually gave a clean chit to N. Srinivasan's son-in-law Gurunath Meiyappan. The Mumbai Police arrested Meiyappan in the spot fixing case after he was named by one of the co-accused Vindoo Dara Singh.

India start 2015 World Cup against Pakistan, final on March 29.

India will launch their title defence against traditional rivals Pakistan in Adelaide, while New Zealand face Sri Lanka in Christchurch and Australia meet England in Melbourne on the opening day of ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 to be jointly hosted by Australia and New Zealand from February 14 to March 29.

India, who won the 2011 edition of the World Cup after a gap of 28 years have been grouped with South Africa, Pakistan, West Indies, Zimbabwe and Ireland and a yet to be decided Qualifier 4. The No.1 ranked ODI team would take on Pakistan on February 15 and South Africa on February 22, followed by Qualifier 4 in Perth on February 28, West Indies in Perth on March 6, Ireland in Hamilton on March 10 and Zimbabwe on March 14.

It's D-Day for Telangana as UPA allies are likely to discuss the Congress Core Group's proposal to create a separate state. The Congress Working Committee is set to meet after that meeting at 5.30 on Tuesday evening where the proposal is likely to be discussed.

The CWC is then likely to pass a resolution, which may endorse creating a separate state of Telangana. The CWC resolution may address other demands for separate states and is likely to suggest setting of a state reorganisation committee.

UP will play key role in govt formation in 2014: Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav on Monday claimed Uttar Pradesh would play an “important” role in the formation of the next government at the Centre after the 2014 Lok Sabha polls due to the sheer number of the parliamentary seats in the state.

“Uttar Pradesh will play an important role in formation of the government at the Centre as the size of Lok Sabha seats in the state is huge. We have eighty seats compared to other states which boasts of just 10 to 12 seats. UP has always been deciding formation of the central government,” Mulayam told reporters here when asked whether he would be a king or a kingmaker in the general election.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav is under pressure after IAS officer Durga Shakti Nagpal was suspended allegedly for going tough on the sand mining mafia in Greater Noida.

After widespread outrage and criticism from the Opposition and the IAS officers association, her suspension may just be revoked. "A suspension order isn't up for debate, I will look into this on Wednesday," said Akhilesh Yadav, promising a review of his own decision.

Durga, a 2009 batch IAS officer, had ordered a crackdown on illegal sand mining rampant on Yamuna and Hindon river beds. But she was suspended for her decision of bringing down a wall of a mosque in a village in Greater Noida, a move which generated some tension on the ground.

The latest opinion poll by C-Voter for Times Now is interesting for three reasons:

it acknowledges one thing we already know, and raises two possibilities that we had hoped we wouldn’t have to consider in 2014:

 

a sub-optimal NDA gain, and an indeterminate coalition of regional parties that surely can’t last in power.

 

 In summary, this is what the poll shows: a UPA total falling dramatically by 93 seats from 227 in 2009 to 134 now;

 

an NDA rising from 132 to just 156 – a gain of a mere 24 seats (thanks largely to the Janata Dal(U)’s exit); and a motley group of regional parties with 253 seats between them – a gain of 69 seats.

30 percent Lok Sabha MPs have criminal cases against them: report.

About 30 percent of Lok Sabha members and 17 percent of Rajya Sabha members have criminal cases pending against them, said a report which noted that the probability of winning an election by a candidate with criminal record is higher than that of one with a clean background.

Shiv Sena members top the list, the report released Monday. The joint report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and the National Election Watch (NEW) was based on affidavits filed by candidates during elections since 2004.

Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt turns 54 today. It's a quiet birthday for the Policegiri actor, who is in Yerwada Central Jail.

He surrendered before a Mumbai Special Court May 16 to serve the remainder of his sentence after his conviction in the 1993 Mumbai serial blasts case.

On May 22, he was shifted out of Mumbai's Arthur Road Central Jail and whisked off to Yerawada Central Jail to serve the sentence that remained.

ISRO, Tata Motors develop India's first fuel cell bus.

For the first time in the country, a Hydrogen-powered automobile bus has been developed by Tata Motors and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) after several years of research.

The hydrogen fuel-fitted bus was demonstrated at Liquid Propulsion Systems Centre, an ISRO facility in Mahendragiri in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. It's a CNG-type bus. Hydrogen in bottles at high pressure is stored at the top of the bus and there would be zero pollution.

An internal Indian cricket board panel investigating allegations of spot-fixing during this year's Indian Premier League has reportedly cleared two teams and their officials.

Board treasurer Ravi Savant is quoted in The Indian Express newspaper as saying no concrete evidence has been found against the Chennai Super Kings or Rajasthan Royals, Chennai's team principal or a Royals co-owner.

In Bankura, the TMC was leading in 45 seats while West Midnapore, the party was leading in 53 seats. The TMC took a huge lead in East Midnapore, where it is ahead in 51 seats, followed by the Left, which is ahead in 10 seats. The Congress is leading in 162 seats in all.

A number of constituencies are being surveyed for his son Pankaj Singh, 34, a kurta-pyjama wearing general secretary in BJP's Uttar Pradesh unit. Chandauli, near Varanasi, currently held by Ramkishun Yadav of the Samajwadi Party, has so far emerged as the front-runner. Modi Visa : If Modi applies for visa, we will consider it said  US state dept.

The US has said that if Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi applies for a visa, his application will be considered in accordance with the American immigration law and policy.

 

“If (the Gujarat) chief minister Modi applies for a visa, his application will be considered to determine whether he qualifies for a visa, in accordance with US immigration law and policy,” state department spokesperson Jen Psaki, told reporters at her daily news conference.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Twitter handle @PMOIndia ranks 28 in a listing of the top 50 world leaders by the Geneva-based @Twiplomacy and Burson-Marsteller that analysed 505 Twitter accounts of heads of states and foreign ministers in 153 countries.

At the top slot, US President @BarackObama’s 33,510,157 followers are 53 times Singh’s 631,956 followers (all data as on July 1, 2013). The second most-followed account does not belong to a political, but a religious leader — Pope Francis with 7.2 million followers on his nine different @Pontifex accounts.

Modi US visa controversy: BJP gets aggressive as MPs back down.

The idea was to cause embarrassment to Narendra Modi in perpetuity. It ended up embarrassing those who tried to ensure that he does not get a US visa instead. The Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) which campaigned for a letter from Indian lawmakers against Modi and supposedly obtained their signatures, real or cut-and-paste, surely has left a lot of MPs red faced.

The controversy around the current letter, bearing signatures of 25 Rajya Sabha members and 40 from the Lok Sabha, first sent to Obama on 26 November, then on 5 December last year and re-sent on Sunday is because of its content. It says: “We wish to respectfully urge you to maintain the current policy of denying Mr Modi a visa to the United States”.
